How to Recognize and Defuse Anxiety…

lake near forest

Anxiety seems to be a word used often in the day and time we live in. So often now people say, ‘my anxiety.’ But we need to be empowered to reverse the anxiety so that it doesn’t just become who we are for the rest of our lives. What was once just passed over is now understood by its symptoms and that is important. People have anxiety for all kinds of reasons but there is help and hope for those who suffer with it.

First, what is anxiety? “Intense, excessive, and persistent worry and fear about everyday situations. Fast heart rate, rapid breathing, sweating, and feeling tired may occur.” Quote Mayo Clinic These are just some of the symptoms.

‘There is a normal anxiety that most people get before public speaking or taking a test.’ “Anxiety is only an indicator of underlying disease when feelings become excessive, all consuming, and interfere with daily living.” Quote Mayo Clinic I recommend if you are suffering with excessive and all-consuming anxiety it is time to seek professional help. You are valuable to God there is no shame in getting professional help.

Since an anxious mind is a fearful mind, we can look at it with the understanding that fear is at the root cause of anxiousness.  When we allow our mind to stay fixed and focused on the situations of what ‘could be or won’t be’ it can become all consuming. This blog post is meant to help you recognize your thoughts and symptoms. And teach you how to change your thoughts so that you stop the worry and fear before it overcomes you. Fear is sneaky it waits and pounces when we least expect it. “Fear is an unpleasant feeling triggered by the perception of danger, real or imagined. Anxiety and fear have the fight or flight response. When in real danger fleeing is recommended. Our feeling of situations can distort our thinking and responses. That is why healthy self-talk can figure out if it is real or imagined.

The bible speaks a lot about fear and anxious thoughts. So from the word of God we can learn how to recognize, replace and overcome anxious thoughts. There are also healthy tools to help us to calm our emotions when anxious.

These two scriptures I speak to calm my mind when anxiety has tried to take over. Isaiah 26:3 NKJ “You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You.” Keeping our eyes on Jesus who is the author and perfector of our faith is essential to keeping a calm mind. This means we rely and depend on Christ sacrifice to provide us with the peace He gave us.  When we trust God to watch over us we can keep our focus on Him and not on what we think will happen.  Assuming what will happen is just an assumption it is not a fact.

Philippians 4:6-8 “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; 7) and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. 8) Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy-meditate on these things.” Meditate equals think on these things.

I love this scripture because it reminds us to think on things that are good, and of a good report when the anxious negative thoughts abound, refuse them in Jesus’ name and replace them with the word of God and anything good, pure, and lovely. We can choose our thoughts!

Deep breathing slowly in and out slowly helps to release the toxins of stress, anxiety and fear which can make our bodies sore and tired. Understanding and recognizing the symptoms of stress, anxiety, and fear you experience helps to control your thoughts and emotions. Being aware of these helps to calm ourselves down quicker.  Dr. Daniel G. Amen wrote in is book ‘Healing Anxiety and Depression’ “Whenever you feel anxious, mad, or tense, take a deep breath, hold it for four to five seconds, then slowly blow it out (take about six to eight seconds to blow out).” He says, “do this about ten times.”  I find this helpful for me when I am also frustrated over a situation it helps calm me down and refocus my thoughts.

Dr. Carolyn Leaf in her book ‘Who Switched off my Brain’ said “A thought may seem harmless, but if it becomes toxic, even just a thought can become physically, emotionally, or spiritually dangerous. Thoughts are measurable and occupy mental ‘real estate.’ Thoughts are active; they grow and change. Thoughts influence every decision, word, actions and physical reaction we make.”  You can refuse negative, unhealthy thoughts sometimes we have to say No I’m not thinking that!

2 Corinthians 10:3-5 “For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. 4) For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, 5) casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.”

This scripture shows that we can take authority in Christ over our thoughts. Truly the battle is won or lost in our minds. We have the choice to think what we want don’t accept every thought that comes to your mind. Strongholds are built in our mind one thought (unchecked) at a time. Be aware of what you are thinking do not give the anxious negative thoughts free rein in your mind because it will build a stronghold in the mind.

Stronghold thinking patterns can produce stress, fear and anxiety also. Once again if you have excessive and all consuming anxiety, it is time to seek professional help. You are valuable to God there is no shame in getting professional help.

Some proactive steps to take: Exercise is a helpful tool to reduce stress, and it is healthy for us along with eating healthy foods. Processed foods poison our bodies system so when you can avoid processed foods. We use Juice Plus and vitamins to help our body’s immune system. Drink water it’s not my favorite but it is essential for our bodies. Finding time to get alone with God and pray and meditate on the word will also help reduce stress, anxiety etc.

I thank God that He is with us and has given us everything we need for life and godliness. Jesus’ sacrifice paid the price for our salvation and in that is healing, deliverance, joy and peace.

How to stop fear from stopping you!

Jesus is the living Word

There are all kinds of fears from interpersonal problems, phobias, or future decisions and the list go on. When fear stops us from moving forward in life it’s time to address it and get free of it. When your instinct is to run away instead of face the problem it is time to face it.

What makes us want to proceed in a situation that is hurting us instead of facing what keeps us locked up inside? Usually, some type of fear either of rejection, failure, people, circumstances, projected outcomes etc. Sometimes we do not even realize it is fear stopping us. We cast the blame on others, or we get so accustomed to being afraid we think its normal for us. But God has so much more for you than you can even imagine.

Fear can grip our minds and hearts that we don’t move, it makes us not want to face pain, but God has a greater plan. Fear is not from God. When you’re a child of God you have what it takes in Christ to overcome anything. When we give fear an open door to torment us it becomes a stronghold designed in such a way that you accept it as ‘that’s just how I am.’ But fear isn’t the way that you are its what fear is trying to get you to believe you are.

First allow me to make a distinction there is a healthy feeling of fear if you’re walking alone and sense somethings wrong follow that inclination and get to safety. That’s not the terror I’m talking about. I’m talking about the type of fear that stops you from being all that God called you to be.

When fear tries to stop you, we have the power to cast it off us and others in Jesus’ name. Fear will play along with your mind and tell you lies to keep you believing you can’t, or it won’t work, it’s bad etc. Do not accept the lies! Speak out in Jesus’ name ‘No I have the mind of Christ’ “I can do all things through Christ Jesus who strengthens me to do it.”

I speak this scripture to fear, 2 Timothy 1:7 “God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” This is a promise a child of God can say out loud to fear it must leave.

Fear is a spirit, with an assignment to make you believe lies are real and to torment you to stop you from living an abundant life.

Faith in God is real, trusting in God is real but fear of something seems real but it is a smoke screen to stop you from whatever it is sent to stop you from. Tell it to go in Jesus’ name. It sounds simplistic because Jesus did the work at Calvary for you to be free of fear. He defeated the enemy and gave us the power to cast out demons in His name.

Jesus supplied so much more than just freedom from fear. Do I get afraid sometimes? Yes, I have but God has empowered me to rebuke it in Jesus’ name and it leaves. Start speaking the name of Jesus to fear it isn’t from Him so it must go. It is time to live the life of freedom from fear that Jesus paid the price for you to live.

What are Strongholds and Roots?

What is a stronghold? Where are they erected? How do we pull them down? What is the difference between strongholds and roots?

The Holy Spirit spoke to me years ago “When there are bad roots in our lives such as rejection, shame, fears, etc. you have to first pull-down the stronghold protecting the root or roots, to be able to uproot the bad root’s so you then may be able to live in freedom.”

2 Corinthians 10:3-5 AMP “For though we walk (live) in the flesh we are not carrying on our warfare according to the flesh and using mere human weapons. 4) For the weapons of our warfare are not physical [weapons of flesh & blood] but they are mighty before God, for the overthrow and destruction of strongholds. 5) [In as much as we]refute arguments, theories, and reasonings and every proud and lofty thing that sets itself up against the [true]knowledge of God, and we lead every thought and purpose away captive into the obedience of Christ(the Messiah, the Anointed One.)”

What is a stronghold? I thought years ago the stronghold was the action, habits or behaviors that you can’t control but no that is just fruit. The stronghold is the thoughts, arguments, theories and reasonings we use to uphold and defend our actions, habits and behaviors. So, the real strongholds remain the beliefs, thoughts and views that validate our actions, habits and behaviors.

Thayer’s Greek English Lexicon “a stronghold is what one uses to fortify and defend a personal belief, idea or opinion against outside opposition. A Stronghold is the fortification around and defense of what you believe especially when you are wrong.”

I used to think a stronghold was a habit, action or addiction that you cannot stop on your own. But we must understand the action is just the fruit of the stronghold.

The stronghold is the thoughts, arguments, theories and reasonings we use to uphold and validate our actions, habits, behaviors.

Strong’s Greek Dictionary Stronghold: “To Fortify, through the idea of holding safely; a castle (fig: argument: stronghold)”

Webster’s Dictionary stronghold “1) a fortress 2) an area dominated or occupied by a special group”

Since we now know exactly what a stronghold is, we need to answer where are they, the answer is they’re in the mind and heart.

The mind is like a rudder to a ship it steers the body. We usually feel or think before we do. I’ve heard it said an addict relapses in their mind before they relapse physically. This statement lets you know how important your thoughts are.

Strongholds protect roots (the arguments, theories and opinions) that validate the behaviors or actions need to be removed so that the original ‘root problem’ can be dealt with. You can choose to change how you think but if the original (root problem) hurt, pain, or trauma is repressed then it will surface in all kinds of unhealthy behaviors, actions and attitudes etc.

Root “3) a support: base 4) an essential part or element: core A primary source or origin.” Roots “To become firmly settled or entrenched…”

God’s Word states in Jeremiah 1:10 “See, I have this day appointed you to the oversight of the nations and the kingdoms to root out and pull down; to destroy and over throw; to build and to plant.”

By the power of the Holy Spirit we are going to begin to pull down strongholds (the beliefs, theories, opinions and arguments that are contrary to God’s way & word) so that we can up-root bad and unhealthy roots (root problems) in our lives and then plant healthy seeds which will make healthy roots. The word of God is the seeds of truth we are going to sow and plant in our minds, hearts and lives.

Take a moment and look at your life where are you concerning acceptance? Do you feel accepted or are you struggling with feelings and thoughts of worthlessness? Do you speak well about yourself? If your answer is no, then it’s time to let the Holy Spirit show you what reasonings, theories, and opinions  (strongholds) that are validating your behaviors, actions, habit’s or addictions to medicate yourself to feel accepted. Or the words you are repeating in your head to continue to feel worthless. When we feel or think we are worthless it comes from a hurt, pain, trauma that must be healed.

Unhealthy roots (root problems) develop when we repress hurts, traumas or pain from our past. They can form into unhealthy ways of coping. All pain needs to be voiced when we deny hurt a voice, we push it down, but nothing stays down it always comes to the surface in ways that we least expect. These are the roots (root problem) that need to be healed.

My prayer for you: Dear Heavenly Father through your Holy Spirit uncover the strongholds (thoughts, theories and opinions) that are defending & validating the behaviors, attitudes or actions and I pray you heal each person reading this to feel accepted. Lord remove any blinders to the truth of who you are and bring clarity and healing to the pain and hurt that is causing unacceptance in Jesus name. Amen Who is the keeper of your mind? Dusty Ducts…

We were supposed to have our duct work cleaned today. What does that entail? They come in and clean out all the ducts and returns. Plus, it includes furnace cleaning. It leaves the home with fresh air to breathe  through your ducts.

But they couldn’t clean our ducts because there is mold in the crawl space. So now we must deal with the underlying problem before the ducts can be cleaned.

As I ponder on this, I thought of how the mind and body are designed. The brain is fascinating how complex and intricate almost like a computer. The thoughts you think build or destroy your health.

I’m not an expert on the physiology of the human body. But the Bible tells us a lot about thoughts.  Proverbs says, “as a man thinks so is, he…” Isaiah 26:3 states, “You will keep him in perfect peace, who’s mind is stayed on you because he trusts in you.”

Unchecked thoughts are like dust in the ducts it just builds up until it’s causing problems.

We are designed by God with a will to choose. You can choose which thoughts you will allow to stay, and which ones need to go. The choice is yours!  But when thoughts are left unchecked and their anxious, negative or fearful they build more of the same thoughts.

I want to grow my brains capacity and so can you. There are many things that help our brains. Just a few things healthy foods, exercises and learning something new help to grow a healthy brain. There are lots of other things too.

But you can start by changing your thoughts; the Bible clearly tells us how. In 2 Corinthians 10:4-5 “For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, 5- casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.”

Strongholds are thought patterns that entrench in your mind trying to keep you blocked.  They become like and argument in your own head telling you why you can’t…

So, how do you change your thoughts?  First by cleaning out the anxious, negative and fearful thoughts. Tear them down using your will and in Jesus name refuse to allow them to stay.  Sometimes you may have to speak it out loud.

Secondly, by replacing those thoughts with positive, faith and uplifting scriptures and good thoughts. Such as God’s love, His peace, and  joy thoughts etc. Find a scripture that fits your situation and think on that.

2 Timothy 1:6  tells us fear isn’t from God.  Philippians chapter 3 is an excellent passage of scripture to help with anxiousness and thinking on good things.

Positive thinking alone will not eradicate the anxious, negative or fearful thoughts. You will need to tear them down in Jesus name and replace them when it’s been a long habit. Sometimes forgiveness is necessary to start the process especially if your holding onto what someone has done or said to you.

I believe once you begin to activate your will and choose your thoughts regularly you will see a difference in your mental outlook.
